On Thursday 8th March, representatives from Irish Concrete Federation (ICF) and Cement Manufactures Ireland (CMI) presented Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) with laboratory equipment for testing of concrete for its Civil and Structural Engineering laboratory. Liam Smyth (ICF) and Richard Bradley (CMI) presented the equipment to Brian O’Rourke, Lecturer/B. Eng (Hons) Structural Engineering Course Coordinator, CIT.
Also in attendance were students from 2nd Year BSC Hons in Structural Engineering that recently completed the new third-level course in Concrete Technology. This course was developed in 2017 by the Concrete Development Group with the input of a number of eminent academics from Irish colleges. CIT and a number of other colleges have adapted the course content for use in their undergraduate engineering courses.
The Concrete Development Group, which is comprised of the ICF and CMI, has presented concrete testing laboratory equipment to CIT and Trinity College Dublin in order to ensure that engineering students gain direct ‘hands on’ experience of using advanced testing equipment.
